Steve Brooks is President of Potomac Associates LLC in Arlington, Virginia. For 21 years he has served as an advisor, consultant, and executive coach, primarily working with large multi-generational family businesses. In that time he has logged more than 35,000 hours coaching senior-level managers and executives on strategy, family and team dynamics, leadership development, conflict resolution, and organizational effectiveness.
Prior to founding Potomac Associates, Steve was Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff of the American Trucking Associations. In that role he oversaw a staff of 270 and directed leaders across public relations, finance, human resources, policy, legal, and intergovernmental affairs. He led the organization’s post-9/11 strategic reorganization, built teams to address national, state, and local policy issues, worked closely with trucking and transportation CEOs, and lobbied elected officials at every level of government.
Steve’s earlier career spanned political and public policy campaigns, lobbying, Capitol Hill work, and association management. A native of Manitou Springs, Colorado, he worked in his family’s furniture refinishing business and in building construction while earning a BS in Political Science and Communications from Colorado State University Pueblo. He served five years as a volunteer firefighter and first responder and competed for eight years in rodeo events including bull riding, bareback riding, and team roping.
He is an avid runner who enjoys high-altitude trail races. In 2021 he was ordained a permanent deacon in the Anglican Church of North America. He serves his church in liturgical worship and pastoral ministry and is a chaplain to the Arlington County Police Department.
